Will the hunt run on my phone?

We have tested and successfully run the hunt on Android phones running versions 2.5 up to version 11. On iphones we have tested up to IOS 11.4.

We have also tested the hunts on Android Tablets and iPads. These will also work but only the versions that have mobile internet conectivity, not just WiFi.

Do you guarantee it will work on my phone?

No we can't. Unfortunately there are so many makes and models of phone out there that we are unable to test our hunts on all of them. Some settings are required on the phone and we need available RAM (Random Access Memory) on the phone for the hunt to work properly. See questions below regarding settings and RAM availability.

What location services do I need?

In general terms we need the facilities for Location to be turned on. If your phone is fitted with GPS then this should be turned on together with any other options which are available to locate your phone. If your phone does not have a GPS facility but relies on working out the distances between phone masts to locate itself then bear in mind that it will need at least 3 phone masts in order to pinpoint its location. This is not usually a problem in well served locations in the centre of cities but can be a problem in more rural areas and particularly in some coastal resorts.

The situation also varies by network provider. To get a guide have a look at this mobile phone coverage site. Bear in mind other teams may have phones on different networks.

You will also need to have Javascript turned on.

You will also need about 100MB of free RAM.

You will also need the phone to be charged before starting the hunt.

How do I check the free RAM that I have?

On Android phones thas is quite simple. In Settings, tap on Applications and when the page opens up, tap on the Running tab. At the bottom of the page is a graph showing used and free RAM. You need approximately 100MB to run trouble free. If you do not have that much free then look to see if you can stop some of the Apps listed as running that you are not using.

iphones and ipads are more difficult as they do not specify how much RAM each phone has. If you are having difficulty running our treasure hunt then see if there are any Apps that can be closed down, also look at clearing out cached web pages and data. Stopping running Apps sometimes only pauses them and does not release RAM and other resources. Sometimes completely powering down the phone and rebooting it can resolve a lot of problems. An article I found useful, although I cannot guarantee everything in it is correct, is this one
